My Brother Brian
January 3, 2009
Off and on I've been running since 1976.
I can't remember my 1st run nor can I remember the distance or time or even date. I've never kept a running log and BY FAR these BLOserGs are the most effort done at keeping any resemblance of a journal. What I do recall though are some of my early influences on tweaking my interest in the sport.
By 1976 running and jogging was becoming very popular and even though I'd never read it ( not much of a reading I is) I was aware of "Running" by Jim Fixx. Bruce Jenner (1976 Olympic decathlon gold medalist) also lit an early spark as did a Streetsboro High School cross country runner named Keith Downing. I didn't know Keith, I was just a freshman and he was an upperclassman, but I knew about him. I was fascinated that he ran ( If memory serves me ) the 1st (or 2nd or even maybe both) Cleveland Marathon. This is when the race was run between Cleveland and Hudson. This isn't fact but it's how I remember it. Anyway I thought it was so cool that someone that went to the same school could do this. Other things I remember about Keith is that it was rumored that he ran like 20 miles every day and that he was REALLY good. I never did get to see him run in person. My Uncle Dennis Gatto was another influence, a great athlete-very inspirational. There are a lot of things that I wish I'd done differently when I was younger, one of those would've been to listen and be around this man more.
By far the most influential person that shaped my early interest in lacing up the shoes was my brother Brian. I remember him running all the time. The one run that I knew he did often, seemed like such a huge distance ( I just entered it on Runners World distance tool and it came out to be aprx 2.46 miles) and one that at the time I could only dream of doing. I'm sure he probably did loops of this route but I can't recall, all I know is that it inspired me to do the same.
I've ran with my brothers John & Dennis but never with my brother Brian but I can honestly say that I've never ran without him.
Thanks Brian,
Love always and forever (LAAF) -your brother joseph.
